A Fourth Live-Action LEGO Movie In Development From Former Star Trek: Prodigy Showrunners

After a slew of big announcements, another LEGO Movie is now in development. The LEGO series has gotten some activity with the well-reviewed 2024 film Piece by Piece. Unlike the other LEGO Movies, which are fictional stories, Piece by Piece is a whimsical biography of singer and musician Pharrell Williams. The main LEGO series, which includes The LEGO Movie and its 2019 follow up, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, was taken over by Universal in 2020. Since then, development on The LEGO Movie 3 is unlikely as Universal is moving the franchise in a different direction.
Per Deadline, the LEGO universe has another exciting update with the development of another LEGO Ninjago Movie. According to the source, brothers Kevin and Dan Hageman are developing a script for a new LEGO Ninjago movie. Unlike the previous LEGO Ninjago Movie, this film will be live-action. Producers on the project include Jill Wilfert and Ryan Christians. Plot details for the live-action LEGO Ninjago Movie are currently under wraps.
Three Other LEGO Movies Were Recently Announced
This will not be the first time this brother duo has worked on a project in a major franchise, as their previous work includes being showrunners for Star Trek: Prodigy and writing multiple seasons of the Ninjago TV series. The news of the Hagemans' movie marks the fourth LEGO-based film announced to be in development this week. Yesterday, it was announced that three live-action LEGO Movies are also in the works. These films are set to be directed by Patty Jenkins, Jake Kasdan, and Joe Cornish.
Like the Hagemans' LEGO Ninjago movie, the plots of all three of these other films are still under wraps. Another interesting similarity is that all four LEGO-based films in development are said to be live-action projects. This represents a big shift in the cinematic LEGO universe, which has historically focused on animated projects that mimic the style of the toys themselves. Both The LEGO Movie and its sequel did include live-action sequences, however, the idea of which could be mimicked in these new films.
LEGO Ninjago Is Historically The Weak Link
Making a live-action LEGO Ninjago movie is perhaps the biggest risk of the announced projects. With a 56% Tomatometer and even worse audience score, the animated LEGO Ninjago Movie is regularly regarded as the weakest in the LEGO Franchise. This presents a challenge for the Hageman brothers, as they will have to create something original and unique out of one of the franchise's more disliked aspects. Not only that, but they will have to do so while also navigating the franchise's complicated switch to live-action.
