Good news for LEGO DC fans ahead of the ‘summer of Superman’
According to Rachel Davies from Brick Fanatics, the future is bright and hopefully not Batman black for LEGO DC fans with Warner Bros. preparing for the ‘summer of Superman’ in 2025.
LEGO DC has been virtually interchangeable with LEGO Batman of late but 2025 might offer more diversity for DC fans. Warner Bros. is hitting reset on Superman with a new movie coming next summer starring newcomer David Corenswet and that’s set to include a wealth of new merch with a number of licensed partners – including, it seems, the LEGO Group.
Speaking to License Global, Warner Bros. Discovery’s Head of Global Consumer Products Robert Oberschelp noted that DC’s legacy means that “there is a lot of buzz right now from licensees and retailers who want to be part of this brand.”
“Licensees and retailers love [Superman] because the fans do,” Oberschelp continued. “With Superman coming to theaters next summer, we’ve seen a renewed focus on the character from our partners looking to be part of the summer of Superman and the next decade of DC. Superman’s enduring popularity and significance in the DC brand’s global licensing programs are a testament to his iconic status and the love fans have for him.”
That suggests that Superman fans should be able to get their fix of Superman merch – and that should hopefully include some LEGO sets as well.
Also featured in the article was Philippe Roucoule, Head of EMEA Consumer Products at Warner Bros. Discovery, saying: “We’ve got something to offer every fan of different ages and stages. How do we tier the offering and ensure fans connect correctly to the characters they love?
“Be it toys, fashion, home, food, health and beauty, with partners such as Pepco, LEGO, Spin Master or Formitalia; that’s just a few as we have thousands of partners that have already come on board for Superman across all categories.”
This direct reference to LEGO products seems like it’s all but confirmed that LEGO DC will feature some Superman sets. With Warner Bros. and DC starting almost completely fresh with the DCEU, this is the perfect time to begin again with LEGO DC as well.
New actors depicting beloved characters playing out fresh storylines provides plenty of new inspiration for LEGO designers to get stuck into. As it stands, we do have one rumored mech – 76302 Superman Mech vs. Lex Luthor – but if the LEGO Group is involved with the plans at Warner Bros., perhaps LEGO DC fans could expect more.
“It’s fair to say 2025 will be the summer of Superman,” said Roucoule. “There’s not much I can say now, but we’re excited with what we’re hearing about the movie, especially the feedback from retailers and licensees. We’re trying to share as much as we can, but I can say that we’re very much looking forward to what’s coming.”
